Who can become an Adoptive Parent?
We positively welcome adoptive parents from all parts of the community so that we can find the best match for every child.
You can be considered for becoming an adoptive parent if you are:
Children in need of adoption: South Gloucestershire welcomes applicants who can consider children of all ages.
However, South Gloucestershire needs to primarily place children over five years of age, sibling groups ad disabled children, therefore we encourage applicants who are able to offer placements to these children.
Other factors taken into consideration are:
Your relationship: If you are applying as a couple, you need to be able to demonstrate stability in your relationship - either living together or by being married for the last two years.
At present if you are unmarried, only one of the applicants can legally adopt. The second applicant would need to apply for a 'Residence Order' at the time of adoption.
Personal circumstances: An application may be delayed or not pursued if you have a close bereavement in the last six months (eg parent, child or sibling) or if you have had a miscarriage in the last six months. We would delay processing your application until you have had sufficient time to adjust to your loss - however long that might take.
Your own children: There should normally be a minimum gap of two years between the adoptive child and your own child or children.
Fertility Treatment: If you are currently undergoing fertility treatment we would ask you to apply at a later date on completion of your treatment.
Your Health: We will ask you to undergo a medical examination to ensure you are in good, all-round health.
