Who can Adopt?

Adoptive parents come from a range of family circumstances. Some are married or living with partners, others may be single. Some may have children whilst others do not – or perhaps have stepchildren through a second relationship. Adopters need to be over 21 years of age and there is no strict upper age limit. We accept applications from people in North Somerset or within reasonable distance, according to the needs of our children.

How long does it take?

A Preparation training course lasting 3 days, spending time with parents who have adopted children, and discussions between you and a social worker are all part of the assessment process, which we aim to complete within six months of receiving your application.

Once approved, you may be linked with a child locally, or referred to a regional or national exchange if you wish. The time taken for a child/children to be matched with you will vary depending on your wishes and needs.

Who are the children?

Adoptive homes are especially needed for children over the age of two years, for brothers and sisters who need to be placed together, and for children with disabilities. Many children who need an adoptive home are in foster homes, having experienced some kind of trauma in their early lives.

Some children keep contact with their birth families by visits or letters, and all need to grow up with information about their family history.

Adopting a child can provide long term security to help a child cope with difficult early life experiences as well as bringing enormous rewards to the adoptive family. If you enjoy being with children and think you have the qualities to make this happen, find out more NOW!

What’s the next step?

If you would like to receive an information pack on adoption, be invited to an adoption open evening or arrange for a social worker to see you to discuss adoption.
